Virtualization: Alternatives to VMware

The sudden acquisition of VMware by Broadcom has put many companies in a difficult position. A lack of communication and drastically increased licensing costs – in some cases up to ten times the previous operating expenses – are forcing organizations to look for alternative virtualization solutions. These alternatives must not only reduce costs but also enhance the flexibility and efficiency of existing IT systems. At syracom, we faced this exact challenge ourselves. Today, we help other affected companies identify and implement their ideal VMware alternative.

Independent Consulting and In-Depth Market Research for Your Ideal Solution. Our experience – a real-world example:

The Challenge

We faced a critical decision: either accept VMware’s rising licensing costs or migrate to a new virtualization solution. Our key requirements were clearly defined: the migration had to be executed with minimal downtime, and all existing virtual machines needed to be transferred without any data loss.

The Objective

The goal was to identify a cost-effective alternative to VMware that could be seamlessly integrated into our existing IT infrastructure. At the same time, operations needed to continue without significant downtime to ensure uninterrupted business continuity.

The Solution

Switching to a Proxmox cluster enabled a smooth VM migration with minimal downtime. Using the Proxmox import tool, virtual machines were transferred directly from the vCenter and individually verified to ensure the correct migration of all configurations and operating systems. Additionally, the backup strategy was adapted to align with the new infrastructure.

Our services - your advantage: Seamless Migration to the Right Virtualization Solution

1. Analysis of Your Current Infrastructure

Together, we assess the systems and components currently in place within your organization. Our checklist includes: What hardware can be reused?
Which systems need to be rebuilt? Which features are essential for your operations?

2. Cost-Benefit Assessment and Our Recommendation

Should you even migrate? We evaluate whether it makes sense for your organization to stay with VMware and absorb the rising costs, or whether switching to alternatives such as Microsoft Azure, Hyper-V, AWS, or Proxmox would be the smarter choice. Each solution is assessed in terms of suitability, integration capabilities, and cost structure – tailored to your specific business needs.

3. Migration and Implementation

We guide you safely through the migration process, ensuring that your systems are transitioned smoothly, reliably, and without disruption.
Each virtual machine is migrated seamlessly and with minimal downtime to the new environment. We handle all necessary pre- and post-migration tasks to ensure optimal performance of your new virtualization solution.
