A ranking performed by the Australian software manufacturer Atlassian at the beginning of the year picked the "coolest" plugins of 2010. The JIRA Gantt-Chart Plugin developed by Frank Polscheit, Managing Consultant at syracom Consulting AG obtained rank 4 among the 15 best plugins.
The Gantt-Chart Plugin allows JIRA for the first time to create a graphical representation of plans, dependencies, and progress on the time axis. This can be done per project or as a multi-project view on the Dashboard. "Social gadgets" are used for this. This technology developed by Google allows Gantt-Charts to be incorporated very easily into other systems, such as the enterprise-Wiki CONFLUENCE.
This eliminates the frequent need for the parallel use of MS-Project: in addition to reducing licensing costs this also reduces maintenance efforts and possible manual transfer errors. The successful integration allows even agile projects on a JIRA Greenhopper basis to profit from the new plugin: classical management reporting can access the Gantt-Chart representation without being confronted too much with agile methods based on burn-down charts etc. This is especially helpful in the "software-kanban" approach as SCRUM alternative. With the software solutions JIRA and CONFLUENCE the Australian company Atlassian offers two useful tools to support teams and entire companies, to follow processes, plan projects and implement them successfully, and to document requirements, systems, and facts.
CONFLUENCE is being used more and more in well-known companies as enterprise-Wiki for communication, documentation, and knowledge sharing. The Web 2.0 features of the Wiki improve cooperation between employees without the bottlenecks of classical intranets.
JIRA first originated as a web-based application for back tracking and operative project management. Functional expansion and additional plugins, such as the Gantt-Chart plugin, lead to it being increasingly used as a workflow-supported platform in software development in order to support various aspects of the development process: from requirements to release management. An intuitive user interface allows an easy start with JIRA and allows the business unit to model simple business processes.
