Tips and tricks to pass the ArchiMate® 2 certified exam

On this page you find a step-by-step approach complemented by several pieces of advice for preparing the ArchiMate® 2 Certified Exam (ArchiMate Level 2). The information provided refers to the computer-based test hosted by the US-company Prometric. All tips rely on the experience we made when successfully passing the exam here in Germany in 08/2013. Feel free to send us any further advices, improvement suggestions, and remarks regarding the exam via E-Mail. Good luck!

General

  • The majority of the preparation material as well as the exam are available in English language only.
  • Registration for the exam requires the confirmed participation in a accredited ArchiMate® 2 course.
  • An applicant does not need to pass the foundation exam (Level 1) to qualify for the certified version of ArchiMate® 2. The topics tested in Level 2 comprises  those of Level 1.

Exam preparation

  1. Participate in an official ArchiMate® Training Course accredited through the Open Group and subject to charging. Within at least two days the training conveys the content that is needed to pass the exam.
  2. Read the ArchiMate® Foundation Study Guide (228 pages, edition: February 2013) and perform the text and multiple-choice exercises at the end of each chapter.
  3. Carry out the trial test (“Test yourself examination paper”,  19 pages)  that is included in the Certified Study guide. Stick to the real test conditions.
  4. Close any knowledge gaps by extensively study the ArchiMate® 2 Specificiation.
  5. Dive into additional ArchiMate® 2 material and perform the contained preparation questions (cf. further study material). Carefully examine the questions, models, and given answers.
  6. Register for the exam at Prometric, Pay by credit card.

Exam execution

  • To pass the exam, at least 60% are necessary (24 of 40 possible points).
  • All non-native English speakers are granted 90 min. to complete the exam. Although this comprises introduction to the test, this time is more than enough.
  • Working time continuous when interrupting the exam for a break (drinking,  bathroom).
  • For each question between 4 to 5 answers are given with exactly one correct answer.
  • If two answers are very much akin, one of them is often the right solution. An answer is not correct if parts thereof are wrong (even if other parts are correct).
  • In case of uncertainty, it is wise to make use of the markup function provided by the exam software and to proceed with the subsequent question. Highlighted question should be revised at the end.
  • Each question should be answered given that there is no deduction in points for wrong answers. Often eliminating wrong answers (in particular so called “distractors”) help to narrow down the initial set to three or two possibilities.
  • Focus areas: framework (aspects, layers, internal vs. external), concepts (collaboration and interaction), relationships (structural, dynamic, other) und viewpoints.
  • Approx. 50% of the questions refer to a specific model. The latter has to be analyzed in detail.
